Beavers Battle Second-Ranked Iowa in Season Opener

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The 23rd ranked-Oregon State wrestling team battled no. 2 Iowa in the season opener for 2024-25. Iowa took the dual by a 30-7 score on Saturday night.
A pair of matches were decided by a single point and eight Beavers took on ranked opponents, including close-fought bouts in five.
Leading off the night, 27th-ranked Maximo Renteria (125) defeated Joey Cruz at decision by a 7-3 score, aided by a riding time bonus. Renteria used a third period takedown to take control at 6-3 lead and rode out the final minutes, clinching the extra point.
Making his debut for Oregon State – and inside Gill Coliseum – Ethan Stiles (157) defeated Caleb Rathjen, a returning NCAA qualifier, at major decision by a 12-3 line. With the bout held scoreless to the late stages of the first, Stiles strung a 4-0 lead with a takedown to end the first and an escape to open the second. From there, the Illinois product rode out the match, clinching riding time after clocking 1:36.
In the 141 lb. bout, Nash Singleton fell to Ryder Block after a late takedown by a 5-4 margin, while sixth-ranked Nelson Brands spoiled Sean Harman's Beaver State homecoming with riding time to clinch the 174 bout with a 2-1 scoreline.
Fourth-ranked Trey Munoz's debut at 197 lbs – and upset bid of #2 Stephen Buchanan - was dashed by a late takedown and a riding time bonus, ending at 9-5. A late takedown in the finale by No. 11 Ben Kueter dashed an upset hope by Brett Mower in the heavyweight bout.
Gill Coliseum saw its third-largest crowd for a wrestling dual as 4,273 fans saw the night's action.
Oregon State will head east for their first road dual of the season, when they will take on North Dakota State this upcoming Friday, November 8th. The first bout is slated for 5 p.m. PT and can be seen on the Bison's livestream.
