Beavers Dominant in Win Over Bison
November 08, 2024 | Wrestling
FARGO, N.D. – Despite dropping the dual's first match – at 149 lbs. – the 25th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team responded with wins in eight of the next nine to defeat North Dakota State by a 35-6 score in the first road dual of the 2024-25 season.
The Beavers (1-1) didn't just record eight of the dual's 10 wins, they had dominant ones in six of them. One ended via fall (Kekana Fouret), three were via technical falls (Nash Singleton, Ethan Stiles and Trey Munoz) and Sean Harman won at major decision.
Following Victor Jacinto's (149) loss at decision, the Beavers rattled off 30 unanswered points from seven bout wins to break the dual open and securing the first win of the season. On the way to his tech fall win, Stiles (157) put it out of hand with a 9-2 lead after the first before stretching the advantage to 19-4, where it would end. Fouret (165) followed Stiles' win with a fall that just needed 3:15 to secure and ultimately giving OSU a 15-3 lead.
Harman – a West Linn, Ore., native – secured his first win in an Oregon State singlet with his major decision win. Facing a 4-3 deficit after one, he turned the tides of the 174-lb. bout with 11 third-period points from three takedowns, a stalling call on Daniel Magayna and the riding time point for the 19-6 win.
Efficient escapes and vital takedowns with the riding time point helped TJ McDonnell secure his first ranked win of the season tonight. He clinched a win via decision at 9-6 over no. 31 Aiden Brenot in the 184-lbs. bout. With a technical fall of his own, Munoz recorded his first win of the season at his new class – 197 – at 20-3 (2:32) to stretch OSU's lead to 20 at 23-3.
Never trailing in the heavyweight bout, Mower used a trio of takedowns to help build his 11-2 major decision win. Leading 6-2 after two frames, Mower strung together the five additional points from an escape, a takedown and the riding time point.
Renteria used a shutout win by decision at 7-0 in the 133-lb. bout while Singleton closed the match with a 15-point win at technical fall at 17-2. In between the wins at 133 and 141, Damion Elliott fell short in the 133-lb. bout to the Bison's Kyle Burwick by decision at 10-7.
Coupled with their wins last time out against second-ranked Iowa, Renteria and Stiles improved their records to 2-0. Tonight's win improved Oregon State's all-time mark to 6-3 against North Dakota State and also snapped a three-dual winning streak by the Bison.
The dual also marked the first of four against foes from the Big 12.
Oregon State will return home next Sunday, November 17th to face another Big 12 foe in the Oklahoma State Cowboys. The dual – which will be streamed exclusively by FloWrestling – is set to start at 2 p.m.
