Men’s Rowing Closes Season Strong

MERCER LAKE, NJ – Oregon State's Varsity 8 finished its season with pride, placing second in the D Final and 20th overall at the IRA National Championships.
After narrowly missing out on the C Final on Saturday, the Beavers stormed back with a vengeance to take 20th, passing MIT and UC San Diego over the second 500 meters and holding off both boats to finish runner-up in the heat behind Wisconsin.
"This was a great senior send off. Each boat had great pieces. Every boat beat their seeds for a total of 10 places above where the seedings predicted we would be," head coach Gabe Winkler said. "These guys worked hard this year. Could we have done something more? Possibly but to gain those inches takes hours of effort. From video to tank sessions to erg pieces, these guys did everything and with positive attitudes. Every year it is hard to say goodbye to the graduates. This one is big. 14 athletes will be going on to bigger projects and fulfilling lives But I know they will remember all the things we did here at Oregon State. Go Beavs."
In the 2V8 race, Oregon State was 5th through 500 meters before surging past Georgetown into fourth. From there, the Beavs gained about two seconds on the Hoyas for the remainder of the race to hold on to fourth in the heat and 16th overall.
The 3V8 opened the day and sat in third for much of the race before a late charge from Navy in the second half of the contest allowed the Midshipmen to sneak past the Beavs and into third. OSU took fourth, and overall finished 16th.
