Gritty Beavs Knock Off Pepperdine at Home
January 30, 2025 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State restarted its offense early in Thursday night's win over Pepperdine before locking down the Waves in the fourth quarter to finish off the 63-54 victory.
The Beavs scored 22 first quarter points to open the game and when the offense bogged down at times in the fourth, they held the visitors to just six points in the final 10 minutes. OSU made 21.4 percent of their shots in the final frame, but it didn't matter as they held Pepperdine to 16.7 percent while making 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch.
"It's nice to be on the winning side. I was proud of the team for rallying this week, staying with it and practicing well," head coach Scott Rueck said. "I thought they a great defensive performance. Pepperdine executes very well. They took care of the ball and hit some tough shots. I thought we defended very well overall and it culminated in the fourth quarter."
Catarina Ferreira set the tone for a gritty effort with 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. The senior benefited from a third quarter adjustment from Rueck that saw her posting up for much of the period while Kelsey Rees – who scored nine points with seven rebounds and four assists – spaced the floor.
Tiara Bolden and Kennedie Shuler each scored 11 for OSU. Shuler made several big free throws down the stretch and took care of the ball with no turnovers from the sophomore point guard. Bolden added a steal and block defensively.
AJ Marotte rounded out the four Beavs in double figures with 10 points. The senior grabbed seven rebounds and handed out three assists. The game is the third time in 2024-25 where four Beavers scored 10+ points. OSU is 3-0 in those games.
Defensively, five Beavs had a steal and four blocked at least one shot. Sela Heide led the rim protection with three rejections. OSU held the Waves to 33.3 percent shooting from the floor and outrebounded them 44-28.
The Beavers close the three-game homestand on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Saint Mary's.
