CORVALLIS – The No. 14 Oregon State men's soccer team dominated the majority of the match, but was unlucky to fall to Notre Dame 1-0 Thursday evening in South Bend, Ind.
The Beavers out-shot the Irish 16-3, and spent virtually the entire second half in their offensive third. Notre Dame scored on its first shot of the match, as Mitch Ferguson got his head on the end of a free kick. Oregon State had seven corner kicks in the contest compared to zero for the Irish.
Oregon State controlled the bulk of the possession early on, but neither side was able to create a clear-cut scoring chance in the opening phase of the match. Fabian Straudi took the game's first shot in the 35th minute, forcing a save with a relatively tame effort from distance.
The Irish opened the scoring against the run of play in the 40th minute, finding the net with a back-post header off a free kick from 35 yards out. Notre Dame headed to the break up 1-0.
Oregon State nearly leveled things up in the opening moments of the second half, as a cross just missed the outstretched foot of Paul Fecteau. The Beavers continued to attack early in the closing 45, as Andrew De Gannes forced a save that tipped off the post in the 61st.
A flurry of activity in the Irish box called the Notre Dame keeper into action multiple times in the 65th, as the Beavers continued to knock on the door. Oregon State pressed forward throughout the closing frame, but could not get on the scoresheet.
Oregon State had 14 shots and five corner kicks in the second half.
The Beavers will head to Bloomington, Ind. on Sunday for a matchup against No. 7 Indiana.
