LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Oregon State volleyball team opened the 2025 season on Saturday evening, falling to sixth-ranked Stanford, 3-0 (14-25, 16-25, 21-25), at the Walter Pyramid.
Lauren Rumel, with 14 kills, paced the Beaver offense while Jackie Matias – in her OSU debut – had a team-best 19 assists while Emma Lilo followed with 19 helpers. Also making their collegiate debuts, Maeli Cormier added seven kills while Alana Marrs contributed six.
Defensively, Yasemin Narlioglu dug out seven times while a trio of Cormier, Matias and Rumel each had six.
Dating back to the 2024 season, the 14 kills from Rumel marked the third appearance in the last four in double-digits for the stat.
Stanford held the Oregon State offense in check, limiting the Beavers to a .133 hitting rate while registering a .452 clip of their own.
The Beavers and Cardinal nearly traded punches in the opening stages of each of the three sets. In the third set, Oregon State inched within two of the Cardinal behind a 5-1 run that included three Rumel kills and another from Alana Marrs to make it 13-11. Kills from Cormier and Rumel let the Beavers draw within three late but one last Cardinal kill sealed the result at 25-21.
The Beavers will conclude play in California tomorrow with a 4 p.m. matchup against Long Beach State, which can be seen on ESPN+.
