CORVALLIS, Ore. – Taray Tela's big night helped fuel an Oregon State win on Thursday, defeating Gonzaga in five sets at Gill Coliseum.
Â
The Provo, Utah, native posted 14 kills, which was the second highest total by any player in the match, adding seven blocks to help the Beavers to a season-best 16. Tela, who ranked second in the Pac-12 for hitting percentage entering Thursday's contest, also hit .480, which extends her streak of games hitting .300 or better out to four.
Â
AC Froehlich led all scorers with 17 kills, adding seven digs and two blocks. Alana Marrs had 12 kills and seven blocks, while Taylor Treahy chipped in seven kills, a career-high eight blocks and two aces, and Cheyenne Green had a line of five kills, three digs and four blocks.
Â
Jackie Matias tallied 41 assists, her third-straight 40-plus assist performance, along with eight digs, three aces and a block; Isabel Bertelsen totaled 17 digs, five assists and one ace and Yasemin Narlioglu tied for the team-high mark with three service aces.
Â
Set one was all about the play of Froehlich (six kills) and Marrs (four kills), who helped the Beavers hit .343 on the way to an eight-point victory. Using a trio of three-plus point runs before either team reached 15 points, the Beavers built a comfortable lead that reached eight when a Tela and Treahy block made it 23-15, and Tela finished the set with her second kill.
Â
Narlioglu's first ace ignited a lightning-fast 6-0 run to open the second that included two more Tela kills. Gonzaga promptly responded, however, eventually rattling off five unanswered to take a two point advantage. Another ace, this time by Treahy, brought the Beavers within one at 17-16, and the Beavers soon took a lead after back-to-back Matias aces made it 23-22; GU scored three unanswered to win the set.
Â
The Beavers and Bulldogs both battled early in the third set, trading the lead multiple times before an OSU run – capped off by Green's first block of the evening – extended the advantage to two. Oregon State took over in the middle part of the set, scoring five unanswered and setting the stage for a 25-19 set win.
Â
Gonzaga took control in the fourth, turning a set that was tied at eight apiece into a 15-10 advantage. OSU fought its way back, getting within two at 22-20, but the Zags won, 25-21.
Â
It was all Oregon State in the final frame, using a 4-0 run midway through to take a 10-4 lead before cruising on to a 15-6 set and match win.
Â
With the result, OSU's fourth win in five set matches this season, the team moves to 12-8 and 7-2 in Pac-12 play with a crucial matchup against Colorado State scheduled for 12 p.m. Saturday inside Gill Coliseum.
