Segura, Edwards Dominate, Beavers Tally 14 Hits in Win Over LBSU
May 09, 2026 | Baseball
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Eric Segura struck out seven over five innings and Zach Edwards retired all 12 batters he faced with six strikeouts as No. 10 Oregon State rolled past Long Beach State 8-1 Saturday night at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
Segura (5-1) allowed just two hits and one earned run against a Long Beach State lineup that could muster little against the junior right-hander. The Beavers (39-11) backed him with 14 hits and 11 walks for their fifth consecutive win.
Edwards' night started in the most precarious of circumstances. With Noah Scott unable to record an out in the sixth — loading the bases on a hit, a walk and a hit batter — the sophomore right-hander entered with the tying run at the plate and Long Beach State threatening. He struck out two of the three batters he faced to end the inning without allowing a run, and he never looked back. Edwards retired the final 12 Beach squad hitters in order, striking out six, to close out his second save of the season.
The four innings marked a career-long for Edwards.
Segura himself had to navigate a first-inning tightrope. After walking Camden Gasser to open the Long Beach State half, he surrendered a wild pitch that moved Gasser to third and then hit Dylan Lina before walking Kaiden Smaka to load the bases with two outs. Segura struck out Murchael Turner swinging on three pitches to leave all three stranded. From there, he cruised — retiring the side in order in the second and third and matching zeroes until a two-out rally in the fourth finally broke LBSU through.
The Beavers gave Segura all the breathing room he needed with a steady strong of runs against Long Beach State starter Luke Howe (5-3), who gave up four earned runs on nine hits over six innings.
Oregon State broke on top in the first when AJ Singer ripped a double to left center that moved Easton Talt from first to third, and Paul Vazquez grounded out to plate Talt. The Beavers made it 2-0 in the third when Bryce Hubbard singled and Vazquez doubled down the left field line to score him.
Vazquez finished 2-for-6 with two RBI.
Oregon State pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to right by Talt, which scored Josh Proctor. Talt was one of the Beavers' most productive hitters despite just one hit — he drew two walks and drove in three runs, including two with two outs in the seventh.
Proctor was a highlight in the middle of the order, going 3-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Singer added three hits of his own, including a double, going 3-for-5. Jacob Krieg provided a key blow off the bench, singling home two runs against reliever Alex Ramos in the ninth to cap the scoring.
Long Beach State's only run came in the fourth on a Turner single and Reid Montgomery's two-out double to right center. LBSU finished with just three hits on the night.
The teams play the final game of the series Sunday at noon.
