HONOLULU - Crystal Draper threw a one-hitter against Nicholls State and Shawna Feldt went 4-for-4 against Nittaidai to lead the No. 12 Oregon State softball team to two victories at the Bank of Hawaii Invitational on Friday.
The Beavers defeated Nicholls State, 5-0, in the morning before posting an 8-7 comeback victory over Nittaidai later in the day.
In the first game, Draper allowed just one hit and struck out nine batters. Nicholls State (8-31) had only two batters reach base in the game. Draper gave up her only hit with a single in the first inning, and she walked a batter in the sixth. She improved to 10-1 with the win.
OSU (23-6-1) jumped ahead early, scoring four runs on five hits in the first inning. NSU pitcher Staci Bednarski left the game with two outs in the first and was replaced by Wendi Scott, who held the Beavers to just four hits and one run for the rest of the game.
"We jumped on it really early, which was great," said coach Kirk Walker. "Unfortunately we went on hold after that, but it was a good win for us."
Feldt, Brynnen Guthrie and Michelle Notaro each had two hits in that game, while Steph Adams came up with a two-run single in the first inning.
In the second game, the Beavers held a 6-3 lead after five innings, but Nittaidai hit three home runs in the final two innings to take a 7-6 lead as OSU headed into the bottom of the seventh.
Guthrie singled to left center with one out in the seventh and went to third on a double from Notaro. Draper then hit a fly ball to left field for the second out, but Feldt lifted a two-run single to center field to win the game. It was her fourth hit of the game, while Guthrie finished the game with three hits.
"We hit the ball really well in the second game. It was a big win to come from behind like that, and it's exciting that our offense was able to put up some real firepower to score so many runs," said Walker. "Hopefully our pitching will get stronger to keep our defense from working so hard to keep the runs down."
The game against Nittaidai is considered an exhibition and will not count on OSU's record or stats. It does, however, lift OSU's record at the Bank of Hawaii Invitational to 2-1 and will help OSU's seeding in the bracket portion of the tournament.
The Beavers continue round robin action with a 5 p.m. PST game against Loyola Marymount on Saturday and will play Hawaii immediately following that game. Bracket play will take place Sunday.
