SEATTLE - Tarrah Beyster hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to give the No. 13 Oregon State softball team a 1-0 win over No. 1 Washington in the second game of a doubleheader. The top-ranked Huskies won the opener, 5-0, at the Husky Softball Stadium on Saturday.
Beyster, who went the distance in the second game to pick up her sixth complete game shutout of the year, led off the ninth inning with a home run that went over the right field fence for the only run of the game.
Washington (57-7, 24-4 Pac-10) had its No. 2-4 hitters up in the bottom of the ninth, but Beyster got all three batters to fly out to either left field or center field to end the game.
Beyster gave up just four hits, walked two batters and struck out four to improve to 25-12 for the year. It was the first time OSU (37-19-1, 7-13 Pac-10) had ever beaten Washington in Seattle.
"It was a great win. Tarrah pitched a phenomenal ball game, and she came up with the big hit late in the game. It was great," said coach Kirk Walker.
The Beavers got six hits off Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year Jennifer Spediacci, who dropped to 31-4 with the loss, despite setting a school record with 18 strikeouts in the game.
Brynnen Guthrie and Michelle Notaro each had two hits apiece in the winning effort, while Steph Adams hit her 14th double of the year in the game.
"It was a hard fought game, and the team did a really nice job. Brynnen Guthrie and Michelle Notaro had a great day offensively at the plate for us," said Walker. "This was a great way to end the (regular) season, and this is definitely a nice momentum to have going into regionals."
The Huskies did all their damage in the third inning of game one. Washington scored all five of its runs on seven hits in the third inning. The Huskies had just two hits in the other five innings of action. UW got three straight hits to start the third before Jenny Topping hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in the first run of the game. The Huskies got four more hits, including a home run from Melissa Downs, in the inning before Crystal Draper struck out Erin Helgeland to end the inning.
Draper dropped to 12-7 after allowing nine hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Jamie Graves improved to 25-3 while allowing two hits in six innings of work, while Bridget Wilcox pitched the final inning and allowed two hits.
Guthrie had two hits in that game as well, while Beyster and Jenni Jodoin each had a single for the Beavers in the opener.
OSU now awaits the NCAA Selection Show, set for 6:30 p.m. PDT, Sunday, May 14. The team will watch the show on the third floor of OSU's Valley Football Center, and fans are invited to watch the show with the team.
