CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Junior shortstop Kelly Petersen hit a pair of home runs as No. 24 Oregon State knocked off Bethune-Cookman College, 2-0, before upsetting No. 6 Georgia by a 5-0 margin in Saturday's softball action at the Palm Springs Classic at Big League Dreams.
OSU (15-6) rolled past the No. 6 Bulldogs (9-2) in the nightcap as senior hurler Monica Hoffman registered her sixth complete game and fifth shut out of the season.
The Beavers opened the scoring early as Kelly Petersen belted her fourth home run of the season with a 2-run shot over the right-center field fence. Oregon State added another run in the bottom of the second when freshman Natalie Johnson doubled down the left field line to score Alana Mendoza.
Three straight singles from Petersen, Vanessa Iapala and Brianne McGowan, a walk by Sherina Galvan and Mendoza getting hit by a pitch helped push the OSU advantage to 5-0 in the third. Georgia threatened to score in the fifth inning after getting a pair of runners on base, but Galvan snagged a lined shot at third base to end the frame. The freshman from Moreno Valley, CA made several stellar defensive plays on the day.
In the victory against Bethune-Cookman (4-16), McGowan tallied six strikeouts while allowing just three hits.
Oregon State got on the board in the third inning with an unearned run and Petersen homered to center field in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Petersen finished the day with a 4-for-6 mark from the plate, two home runs and three runs scored.
OSU wraps up tournament action with an exhibition game against the USA Olympic Team on Sunday at 11 a.m.
