SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Oregon State men's soccer got its first win of the 2012 conference season Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over the San Diego State Aztecs. Senior forward Emery Welshman scored his seventh goal of the season in the 57th minute to provide the winning margin.
The Beavers (6-4-1) pitched their fifth shutout of the season, with freshman keeper Matt Bersano making three saves to earn his first career Pac-12 victory. He made two first half saves as the teams took the scoreless tie into intermission.
The Beavers opened the gridlock on Welshman's score 12 minutes into the second half. Welshman found a loose ball and beat San Diego State keeper Blake Hylen to the lower left corner from approximately 15 yards out to net his fourth game-winning goal of the season.
“Emery was able to turn that into a scoring opportunity and he did what Emery does,” head coach Steve Simmons said. “It was a classic striker's goal.”
Bersano and the defense made sure the lead stuck.
After we scored, they put us on our back foot, but we were able to dig a trench line,” Simmons said. “Matty Bersano made some great saves to preserve the shutout, and I can't say enough about Travis Anderson, Chris Harms, Brenden Anderson and Colin Mitchell.”
Welshman and sophomore forward Khiry Shelton led the team with each having two shots, both on goal. The win gives the Beavers their first conference road victory since defeating the Aztecs in Oct. 2010.
“San Diego State has a high-powered attack,” Simmons said. “To shut them out at their place is definitely a feather in our cap.”
Oregon State will look to carry the momentum into a pair of home matches this weekend, hosting Stanford on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and California on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
