CORVALLIS, Ore. - Camille Saxton and Sara Almen registered doubles doubles but the Oregon State volleyball team was swept by No. 1 Stanford Friday night at Gill Coliseum. Set scores were 18-25, 30-32 and 14-25.
Almen recorded her first career double double, finishing with 10 kills and 13 digs while Saxton posted her fifth of the season. The senior tallied 11 kills and 13 digs.
"The key to this match really was winning the second set because we had every opportunity," Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych said. "We just made a lot of unforced errors at the end of that set that cost us.
"We dug the ball well tonight. That's a key for us that we haven't done so well at in the last couple weeks."
The match was defensive in nature, with the Beavers hitting .151 and Stanford at a .261 clip, below its season average of .273. The Cardinal recorded 70 digs to 60 for the Beavers while Oregon State won the blocking matchup, 10-8.
Haley Clarke led the Beavers with five blocks, all assisted, while Arica Nassar and Almen each had four apiece. The Cardinal was led by Carly Wopat's four.
Four Beavers finished in double-figure kills, led by Becky Defoe's 15. Saxton and Almen were right behind with 13 apiece and Alyssa O'Neil had 12.
Stanford was paced offensively by Brittany Howard's 16 kills and Wopat, who had 12.
Stanford hit .344 and OSU tallied a .281 mark in the first set in which the Cardinal won, 25-18. Almen recorded four kills and a service ace in the frame.
The Beavers pushed Stanford to the brink in the second set, losing 32-30. The Cardinal had set point at 24-23, but a kill by Nassar tied the frame. The Beavers had set point at 27-26 and 28-27, only to see the Cardinal tie it, much like the Beavers earlier. OSU last tied it at 30 on an assisted block by Clarke and Ashley Eneliko, but a kill by Stanford's Karissa Cook and an OSU set error gave the frame to the Cardinal.
The teams were tied at 12 early in set three but Stanford went on a six-point run to gain an 18-12 advantage, a lead it never relinquished. Stanford hit .333 during the frame, compared to .050 for the Beavers.
