CORVALLIS, Ore. - Becky Defoe broke the Oregon State single-season record for digs for the second consecutive season Tuesday night, but the Oregon State volleyball lost to No. 4 USC in three sets at Gill Coliseum. The Trojans took the match by winning 10-25, 14-25 and 20-25.
Defoe finished the night with 23 digs and has 577 on the season. She came into the night needing just two to surpass her total of 555 last season, and picked those up early in the first set.
The Bend, Ore., native would need to match her Tuesday night output on Friday night against Oregon to become the first OSU player with 600 or more digs in a single-season. She's already the first to reach the 500-dig plateau.
"It speaks volumes about her abilities as a defensive player," Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych said. "She spends time working hard on her skills. She's the last to leave the gym and the first one there. She's really improved in all aspects of defense and I think she's going to have a great senior year in 2013."
Offensively, the Trojans (27-4 overall, 15-4 Pac-12 Conference) out-hit the Beavers, .293 to .101. USC also committed just nine errors to 20 for Oregon State, due in large part to USC's eight blocks. Alicia Ogoms and Katie Fuller had four apiece to lead USC.
The Beavers (14-17, 4-15), meanwhile, posted four blocks with Arica Nassar having two to lead the team. She also tied for the team lead in kills with Sara Almen; both had seven.
Defoe's 23 blocks paced Oregon State's defensive attack as the team finished with 54 overall. USC, meanwhile, had 57, led by Natalie Hagglund's 21.
USC took the first set by a 25-10 score thanks to a .395 hitting percentage and holding the Beavers to a .000 clip. The lead changed hands just twice during the frame. Defoe had seven digs during the set.
USC went up 2-0 in the match by hitting .194 but holding the Beavers to another .000 clip en route to the 25-14 win. The lead again changed hands, and the set was tied at four early but USC went on a four-point run to create a gap.
The Beavers upped their hitting percentage to .255 in set three, and held a lead as late as 17-16, but could not hold off the Trojans in a 25-20 loss in the final frame. USC hit .277 during the set.
OSU closes out its 2012 campaign Friday night when hosting Oregon in the Civil War presented by Pacific Source, Your Local Ford Stores, Wells Fargo and McDonald's. That match starts at 8 p.m. and will also be televised on Pac-12 Oregon. Fans are encouraged to stay at Gill Coliseum after the match ends to help honor the Oregon State senior class, which consists of Ashley Eneliko, Martie Massey, Megan McBride, Alyssa O'Neil and Camille Saxton.
