February 19, 2017 | Softball
LAS CRUSES, N.M. – The Oregon State softball team finished the Troy Cox Classic suffering a 14-0 defeat to No. 15/14 Tennessee on Sunday afternoon at the NM State Softball Complex.
Â
The Vols loaded the bases in the first inning, but the Beavers escaped unharmed after a fly out ended the inning. In the bottom of the frame, Oregon State put runners in scoring position, but failed to get any to score.
Â
Tennessee started its scoring in the second inning with a pair of runs and did not look back. The Vols added two runs in the third, six in the fifth and closed its scoring with four in the fifth, while keeping the Beavers from getting a runner on base the rest of the game.
Â
McKenna Arriola and Shelby Weeks recorded the only two hits for the Beavers, both coming in the first inning.
Â
Nerissa Eason (4-1) recorded the loss after pitching the first three innings and giving up nine runs – seven earned – and striking out two batters. Shawna Burke came in in the top of the fourth with two out and finished the rest of the game.
Â
Oregon State (6-2) finished the Troy Cox Classic with a 3-2 record and will head to the Mary Nutter Classic next week. The Beavers will start the Classic facing Long Beach State and North Carolina State on Friday night.
