Beavers Miss Timely Hits in Game Two
April 29, 2017 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon State softball team put runners on base in all but one inning, but could not record any timely hits as it fell to No. 6 Oregon, 7-2 in game two of the Civil War Series. The Beavers left nine runners on base, including at least one in each inning except the sixth.
Oregon State looked to get on the board in the first as it put a pair of runners on board, but could not push any across.
The Beavers again left runners on base in the second before Oregon scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead.
The Ducks increased their lead in the third with two runs before Michelle Sass threw out a runner trying to score.
Sass gave the Beavers its first hit of the game in the top of the fourth with a single through the left side to put runners on first and second, but again could not manufacture any runs.
The Beavers got on the board in the fifth after Sammi Noland took a walk with one out before Natalie Hampton knocked a double off the center-field fence to give OSU runners in prime positon. Two batters later Lovie Lopez knocked a single to score both runners and to cut into the Ducks' lead.
The Ducks responded in the home half of the inning with three runs to increase their lead again after a pair of errors prolonged the inning.
Shelby Weeks led off the final inning with a single, but that is all the Beavs could produce.
The Beavers registered four hits by Sammi Noland, Shelby Weeks, Natalie Hampton and Michelle Sass – her first of her career.
Nerissa Eason recorded the loss after making the start and throwing 4 1/3 innings before Taylor Cotton came in to relieve her. Cotton hurled the final 1 2/3 innings and held the Ducks hitless. Eason gave up seven hits and allowed just two earned runs in the loss.
Oregon State (24-21, 6-11 Pac-12) will finish the Civil War Series Sunday afternoon at 3:05 p.m., on the Pac-12 Network.
