Hampton Breaks RBI Record in Win Over No. 10 Huskies
April 08, 2017 | Softball
SEATTLE – Redshirt senior, Natalie Hampton knocked a RBI single past the second baseman in the first inning to give the Beavers an early lead. But that wasn't all that happened. The Antelope, Calif., native also set the all-time RBI record at Oregon State with her 144th run batted in - passing Tarrah Beyster (1997-00). The Beavers went on to defeat No. 10 Washington, 2-1. The last time Oregon State defeated a top-10 opponent was last season with a 3-2 victory against the No. 10 Huskies in Corvallis.
Â
After finishing Friday night's game this afternoon, Oregon State looked to rebound following the loss. The Beavers scored first in the game again in the first frame after Hampton knocked a RBI single to score Alysha Everett who hit a two-out double prior.
Â
Oregon State continued to hold its one-run lead through the heart of the game and forced the Huskies to leave at least one batter on through the first four innings. The Beavers added an insurance run in the top of the fifth after Everett put a single down the left-field line to score a run. The inning started with McKenna Arriola doubling to center field followed by Shelby Weeks with a single to put runners on the corners.
Â
Washington scored its only run of the game in the home half of the inning after a solo home run cut the Beavers lead to one.
Â
Both teams stranded a runner in the sixth frame and the Beavers went down quickly in the seventh.
Â
The Huskies tried to make a comeback in the bottom half of the inning, but a strikeout thrown by Nerissa Eason and a great play by second baseman Stephanie Merwin helped the Beavers secure the win.
Â
Shelby Weeks, Alysha Everett and Lovie Lopez all finished with multiple hits in the win, while Everett and Hampton each recorded a RBI.
Â
Taylor Cotton picked up the win after starting and pitching six full innings, while punching out two and allowing one earned run. Nerissa Eason pitched the final inning in relief, recording a strikeout and recording her first career save.
Â
Oregon State (19-16, 2-6 Pac-12) will play the rubber match tomorrow night for the series starting at 5:00 pm and broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
