Beavers Drop Rubber Match in Slugfest with No. 10 UW
April 09, 2017 | Softball
SEATTLE – In a game that combined for 21 hits and 18 runs, the Oregon State softball team fought to the final out in the series rubber match with No. 10 Washington, but fell 10-8 on Sunday night at the Husky Softball Stadium. The Beavers juiced the bases in the top of the seventh with no outs, but the Huskies extinguished any scoring or comeback they tried to create.
Â
The Huskies turned the tables on the Beavers, scoring first for the first time in the series. UW put OSU down in order to start the game before taking a 4-0 lead after the first frame.
Â
The Beavers manufactured a run in the second after a Husky error. Oregon State put runners on third and second with one out to key the scoring play.
Â
Washington added to its lead in the home half of the second to increase it to five. Oregon State started the third inning by putting a pair of runners on base before Alysha Everett came to bat. The junior mashed her sixth home run of the season over the right-field fence to bring the Beavers back to within one run.
Â
The Huskies again responded in the home half of the inning with three runs to lead by four again.
Â
Oregon State would again put together a huge scoring frame in the fourth after recording five hits to score four runs. With one out, the Beavs rattled off four-straight singles to score a run. However, they would not stop there. Everett would continue her hot streak with a two-RBI single to tie the game up 8-8.
Â
Again, the Huskies would respond in the home half. This time with back-to-back solo homers to lead off the inning to retake a two-run lead.
Â
Neither teams scored in the fifth or sixth innings as the Beavers would enter the final frame trailing by two.
Â
The Beavers would start the final inning loading the bases via a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch. But everyone would stay stranded as a pair of shallow fly outs and a strikeout ended the game.
Â
Oregon State racked up 10 hits, led by Alysha Everett, Kayleen Shafer and Jessica Garcia who all finished with two. Everett recorded five RBIs for the second time in a week, tying her career high.
Â
Three different pitchers entered the circle, but Meehra Nelson was charged the loss. Nerissa Eason started the game and hurled 2/3 of the first frame before being relieved by Nelson. The sophomore pitched 2 1/3 innings before Taylor Cotton entered and finished the final three frames. The trio accounted for seven earned runs, while collectively giving up 11 hits.
Â
Oregon State (19-17, 2-7 Pac-12) will return to Corvallis and host UCLA in an early week series starting on Thursday at 2:00 pm. All three games will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.
