Beavers End Season Against Kent State
May 20, 2017 | Softball
WACO, Texas – The Oregon State softball team's season came to a close at the hand of Kent State, who put a small rally together in the top of the fifth and held on to knock the Beavers out of the Waco Regional, 2-1. Taylor Cotton finished her career with a stellar performance in the circle, setting a career-high 11 strikeouts in four innings pitched. The lefty faced 20 batters and sat down over half of them, while allowing just four hits.
Â
Cotton recorded eight of the first nine outs for the Beavers to keep the Golden Flash at bay heading into the home half of the third.
Â
Oregon State got on the board first in the third frame off a RBI single from Shelby Weeks. The inning started with a one-out walk by Michelle Sass and McKenna Arriola knocked a base hit to center to put two runners aboard. Jessica Garcia moved Sass 60 feet from home on a fielder's choice before Weeks hit the RBI single. Garcia rounded third too far and was thrown out, which ended the inning.
Â
Cotton continued to dominate in the fourth inning, add another three strikeouts to her name and setting a new career high.
Â
Kent State caught up to the senior in the top of the fifth after a single to center field and an error allowed a run to score with no outs to tie the game at 1-1. The Flash took the lead on the following at bat with another single before Cotton was relieved.
Â
Oregon State had opportunities in the final two frames, putting two runners in scoring position in the sixth and a runner on in the seventh.
Â
The Beavers finished the season 28-27 overall and 9-15 in the Pac-12.
