May 06, 2017 | Softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State softball team rallied late in the sixth inning to comeback to defeat No. 10/11 Utah, 3-1 and to take the series for the first time since 2013. Taylor Cotton made her second start of the series in the circle and allowed just one run on two hits. The lefty has held the Utes to just three hits in the series after pitching a one-hit shutout in Friday's 5-0 victory.
Â
Neither team scored a run through the first four innings as the Beavers stranded six batters and the Utes three.
Â
Utah broke the drought in the top of the fifth as a line shot hit the left-field foul pole for a solo home run. Oregon State looked to respond in the bottom half of the inning after Lovie Lopez knocked a base hit up the middle and stole second to move into score position, but she would stay there.
Â
Oregon State found the equalizer in the bottom of the sixth after Alysha Everett started the inning with a leadoff walk. Pinch hitter Alyssa Pelegrin drew a walk two batters later to put a pair of runners on board with one out. Kaylee Shafer knocked a fielder's choice to short, but an error on the third baseman allowed pinch runner Riley Gregoire to score and tie the game.
Â
McKenna Arriola also drew a walk with two outs in the sixth before Shelby Weeks blasted a single to short to score two more runs and give the Beavers a late 3-1 lead.
Â
Utah put a pair of runners on base in the seventh, but a ground out ended the game and gave the Beavers the series win.
Â
Shelby Weeks led the Beavers from the dish recording two RBIs, while Lovie Lopez added a pair of hits. Taylor Cotton picked up her 13th win of the season holding the Utes to just two hits in the win and striking out two batters.
Â
