Beavers Stumble in Home Finale
May 07, 2017 | Softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State softball team stumbled in its final home game of the season as it suffered a 6-0 loss against No. 10/11 Utah on Sunday afternoon. The Beavers secured the series victory with wins on Friday and Saturday afternoon to win their second Pac-12 series against a top-10 opponent.
The Beavers recognized their three seniors, Natalie Hampton, Taylor Cotton and Sammi Noland following the game.
Â
Utah – who was held to just two hits entering the finale – started the game with back-to-back singles to threaten early. However, three straight outs by Taylor Cotton and Company ended the inning unharmed.
Â
The Beavers struggled to generate a hit through the first two frames as they went down in order. Utah took the lead – one that it would never give up – in the second frame after a two-out two-run home run.
Â
The Utes added to their lead in the third with a RBI single and in the fourth on an OSU miscue and a walk to hold a 5-0 advantage.
Â
Oregon State was held in check down the stretch as it left eight runners on base in the last four frames.
Â
Utah added an insurance run in the top of the seven to put the final score at 6-0.
Â
Taylor Cotton made her third-straight start and threw two complete innings before Nerissa Eason came in as relief. The freshman finished the game hurling five frames, while striking out three. The pair combined for 11 hits and six runs – four earned – while walking three batters.
Â
Jessica Garcia paced the offense finishing 2-for-3 in the dish, while Kayleen Shafer and Shelby Weeks both tabbed a hit.
Â
Oregon State (27-23, 8-13 Pac-12) will finish the season at California for a three game series starting on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks.
