Oregon State Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Portland State

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State softball swept a nonconference doubleheader against Portland State on Tuesday afternoon at OSU Softball Complex. The Beavers won game one in five innings 8-0, and followed up with a 2-1 win in game two.
Overall the Beavers improve to 26-17 and hold a 7-8 record in Pac-12 play. Meanwhile, Portland State falls to 12-29.
Game 1, 8-0
Oregon State started fast and early in the first game of the day putting up four runs in the second and third innings to end the game early.
All but two of the starters for the Beavers registered a hit. Jessica Garcia finished 2-for-2 with four RBI, while McKenna Arriola added three RBI.
Meehra Nelson commanded the circle tossing a complete game shutout, her fourth of the year, while fanning one and giving up just three hits.
Arriola drove in the first run with an infield RBI scoring Michelle Sass. In the next at bat Garcia registered the first two of her RBI with an infield single. Alysha Everett added the final run of the inning with an RBI double down the left field line.
Oregon State scored four more runs in the third inning with the first two coming off a two RBI single through the left side from Arriola. Garcia followed up once again hitting a two RBI single through the right side.
The Beavers defense got the first three batters down in the fifth ending the game by a final of 8-0.
Game 2, 2-1
Game two proved to be a closer affair that headed to the bottom of the seventh tied before Kayleen Shafer hit a walk-off home run winning the game.
Nerissa Eason started in the circle for Oregon State and picked up her second win of the year. Eason opened the game with four blank frames before giving up a home run in the fifth inning. She finished with one earned run and five strikeouts.
Oregon State led 1-0 after the third inning thanks to an RBI single up the middle from freshman Hope Brandner, her team-best 28th of the year.
Knotted at one apiece in the bottom of the seventh Shafer led the inning off and took two pitches before sending her first swing over the fence for her first home run of the year and winning the game for the Beavers 2-1.
Alysha Everett led the way offensively for Oregon State going 2-for-3 at the plate.
