Beavers Drop Game Two to Sun Devils
March 16, 2019 | Softball
Tempe, Ariz. – Senior Shelby Weeks hits her first home run of the season, but the Beavers still fall to No. 17/19 Arizona State in the second game of a three-game series, 18-2.
Arizona State led-off with a home run in the bottom of the first inning, but OSU evened the score in the top of the second after Jessica Garcia hit a single back up the middle. Izzy Owen followed that with a sac bunt to advance Garcia into scoring position for Maia Rader to hit a RBI double into center field to level it a one all.
The Beavers held strong with a three-and-out defensive performance in the second beginning with freshman Ashton Phillips crashing into the right-field wall for the first out. Senior Meehra Nelson struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning.
The Sun Devils recaptured the lead in the third adding 13 runs to make it 14-1. ASU scored four more times to extend its lead to 18-1.
Weeks hit her solo shot in the top of the fifth as the lead-off batter. This is Weeks' fifth career home run.
Oregon State had multiple players with at least one hit, including: Lovie Lopez, Frankie Hammoude, Garcia, Rader and Weeks.
Senior Meehra Nelson started in the circle for the Beavers and drops to 5-2 on the season. Nelson pitched 2.2 innings before junior Nerissa Eason came in. Eason faced nine batters in the third before being replaced with freshman Payton Goodrich, who pitched 1.1 innings and finished with two strike outs in her first performance as a Beaver.
