Beavers Open Pac-12 Play in Tempe

THIS WEEK:
• Oregon State opens up Pac-12 play in Tempe, Ariz. with three games against the Sun Devils.
• This is the second time OSU will play in Farrington Stadium after opening the season there against Seattle U Feb. 9.

2019 SCHEDULE:
• The non-conference portion of Oregon State's 2019 schedule features a gauntlet of games over the course of five-tournaments and two non-conference games.
• OSU opened the season with the Kajikawa Classic for the ninth time in 10 years.
• The Stacy Winsberg Tournament in Long Beach and Los Angeles, Calif. featured two 2018 NCAA Regional teams, Long Beach State and Ole Miss.
• The Beavers went to Norman, Okla. to face 2018 WCWS participant, Oklahoma, and NCAA Regional qualifier Louisiana.
• Oregon State also made appearances at the UOP-Libby Matson Tournament and LMU Tournament before finishing out the non-conference schedule with a double-header at Portland State.
• The conference portion features six opponents that made varying finishes in the 2018 NCAA Tournament:
  - Cal - Regionals.
  - Arizona - Super Regionals.
  - Arizona State, UCLA and Oregon - WCWS.
  - Washington - 2018 WCWS Runner-Up.
• In total, Oregon State will face 11 opponents from the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
• 14 opponents finished with a top-100 RPI in 2018, 10 opponents had a top-50 RPI, eight had a top-25 RPI and five had a top-10 RPI.
BEAVER EXPERIENCE:
• Sophomore Missy Nunes leads the returners starting in 21 games, primarily at third base, and batting .323 with five home runs, three doubles, 12 runs and 18 RBIs. Nunes started the 2019 season much like the 2018 season with a home run in the first-three games of the season. Nunes recorded two home runs at the LMU Tournament: vs. LMU in the fifth inning and vs. New Mexico in the first inning.
• Senior Shelby Weeks has recorded eight stolen bases this season – bringing her career total to 51, just seven away from holding the OSU Career Record. Weeks has scored 17 runs this season, the most by a Beaver, throughout her 21 starts in the outfield.
• Jessica Garcia is batting .288 with one triple, 12 runs and six RBIs. Garcia's triple marks the ninth in her career placing her tied for second in OSU History. Garcia leads the team with nine stolen bases this season – currently No. 5 in OSU Career Stolen Bases with 43.
• Kayleen Shafer has started in 10 games behind the plate and is batting .458 through those 10 games. Shafer hit one home run against Nevada and has three doubles, six runs and eight RBIs on the season. Shafer has also picked off one runner against Oklahoma on Mar. 1.
• Camryn Ybarra has started in 15 games with 17 game appearances primarily at designated player. Ybarra has two doubles, three RBIs and two runs.
• Lovie Lopez has seen time in 18 games with nine starts at designated player. Lopez is batting .367 with two doubles, two RBIs and nine runs.
• Sophomore Mariah Mazon has taken charge of the circle for the Beavers with an 8-3 record, 1.92 ERA with three solo shutouts and seven complete games. Mazon has struck out 72 batters in 65.2 innings.
• Meehra Nelson also returns to the circle for her senior season. Nelson has pitched 54.1 innings with 67 strike outs and only 11 walks. Nelson has two shutouts this season in four complete games and one save.
• Nerissa Eason rounds out the pitching staff with a 3-1 record in six appearances. Eason has two complete games with one shutout. Eason has pitched 22.0 innings and recorded 20 strike outs.
• OSU rounds out the upper classman with Chance Burden, Michelle Sass and Fallon Molnar all seeing time in at least four games.Â
• Earlier this season at Farrington Stadium, Burden hit a lead-off double in the top of the seventh inning.
NEWCOMER PRESENCE:
• Oregon State added seven new faces during the offseason: Karla Calderon, Payton Goodrich, Frankie Hammoude, Bailey McLaughlin, Izzy Owen, Ashton Phillips and Maia Rader.
• Hammoude wasted no time making herself a permanent in the OSU lineup starting at first base and batting cleanup in the first 21 games. Hammoude hit a two-run homer in her first at bat as a Beaver in the first inning vs. CSUN and finished Kajikawa Classic with six hits, three home runs and nine RBIs. Hammoude went 4-for-4 with back-to-back home runs against Fresno State on Feb. 15. In total, Hammoude has recorded seven home runs, 23 RBIs, 10 runs while batting .351 through the first 21 games.
• Rader has started in 20 games this season at shortstop batting .309 going 17-of-55.
• McLaughlin has seen time in 12 games with 11 starts behind the plate. McLaughlin hit a two-run home run in her first game as a Beaver against Weber State. Last weekend, McLaughlin laid down a near-perfect bunt against New Mexico to advance runners to second and third that would both go on to score.
• Owen has started 17 games on 18 appearances at second base and has recorded 12 hits with four runs and six RBIs.
• Phillips has started eight games this season, all in right field, and is batting .273 with one double, five runs and one RBI.
• Calderon has seen time in 12 games as a pinch runner and has score five runs.
ALWAYS AWAY:
• Oregon State is on the road for the first six weeks of the season starting with five tournaments and finishing with a three-game series at ASU.
• Of the 21 games played to date, the Beavers have been listed as the home team on only five occasions.
• OSU will not return home until March 22-24 when scheduled to host Arizona for a three-game series under the new lights at the OSU Softball Complex.
RANKINGS:
• The Beavers are currently receiving votes in both major polls. OSU broke into the Top 25 in week three – USA Today/NFCA at No. 25 and ESPN.com/USA Softball tied at No. 23.
• OSU was picked to tie for fifth in the Pac-12 Preseason Poll.Â
• Pac-12 Rankings: T-No. 2 Stolen bases (31), T-No. 2 Batters struck out looking (51), T-No. 2 Runners picked off (1) and T-No. 3 Hit by pitch (17).
COACHING PROFILES:Â
• Head coach Laura Berg hung up her cleats after nearly 20-years of playing softball and spent a year with the LAPD in 2010-11 before returning to the game as an assistant coach for the 2012 season at Oregon State.
• Berg enters her seventh season at the helm of the Oregon State program, recording four NCAA Tournament appearances.Â
• Berg holds a 182-161-1 overall record and is 45-94 in Pac-12 play.
• Associate head coach Marcie Green also has experience with law enforcement. Green studied criminology at Fresno State and spent five years as a prison guard at Corcoran State Prison in California following graduation before starting to coach.
• Assistant coach Eric Leyba joins the staff after stints with the Northwest Bullets and being the head coach at Churchill High School for the past 15 years.
• Volunteer Assistant Coach Hannah Akamine is also new to the coaching staff, but not the Orange and Black. Akamine played for Berg and Green in 2015 as the starting catcher for the Beavers.
• Heather Smith also returns for her 18th season as Director of Operations.
NATIONAL SOFTBALL:
• Laura Berg has been announced as one of the Assistant Coach for the Women's National Team by USA Softball. Berg will join Howard Dobson, Tairia Flowers and WNT Head Coach Ken Eriksen for the 2019 season.
• Freshman Frankie Hammoude has been named to the 2019 USA Softball Junior Women's National Training Team for the summer of 2019.
• Sophomore Mariah Mazon will be trying out for the Mexico National Team following the 2019 regular season.
• Recent OSU Softball signee, Grace Messmer, has made the Canadian Junior Women's National Team.Â
NCAA TOURNAMENT:
• The 2018 season marked the fourth time the Beavers reached the NCAA Tournament under the direction of head coach Laura Berg, as well as the 14th time in program history.
• The Beavers are 32-29 all-time in their 134tournament appearances following two wins and two losses at the Tuscaloosa Regional in 2018.
• The last time OSU won a regional was in 2006 when it played Nevada and No. 19 Baylor twice. OSU went on to play in the Women's College World Series that year.
• Berg and former head coach Kirk Walker (1995-2012) are the only head coaches in program history to reach the NCAA Tournament.
KNOW WHAT IT TAKES:
• Oregon State's coaching staff is no stranger when it comes to the NCAA Tournament and WCWS.
• Both Berg and Green played at Fresno State in the '90s and gained plenty of experience in the path to the WCWS.
• Coach Berg played from 1994-95 and 1997-98 making it to the WCWS three times and won the national championship in '98.
• Coach Green played from 1990-93 and appeared in three WCWS, including a runner-up finish in 1990.
• Volunteer assistant coach Hannah Akamine made the WCWS as the catcher for Tennessee in its 2013 runner-up finish.
