Oregon State Defeats No. 17/19 Arizona State in Pac-12 Opener
March 15, 2019 | Softball
Tempe, Ariz. – Seniors Kayleen Shafer and Shelby Weeks led the charge for the Beavers as the Oregon State softball team captured a 5-1 victory over the No. 17/19 Sun Devils.
The Beavers improve to 17-5 overall and 1-0 in Pacific-12 Conference action. Meanwhile, the No. 17/19 Sun Devils fall to 20-8 overall and 0-1 in Pac-12 play. This is the first time Oregon State has won the opening Pac-12 game since defeating, at the time, No. 5 Arizona State at the OSU Softball Complex on March 14, 2014.
Shafer went 2-for-4 with one double, one run and one RBI. Weeks went 1-for-2 with three runs and one stolen base. Missy Nunes, Jessica Garcia and Ashton Phillips all tacked on one hit each.
Oregon State started fast putting three runs up in the first inning, all scored during a two-out rally. Weeks led off with a walk and advanced to second as Lovie Lopez was out at first. Weeks then stole her ninth base on the season and 52nd in her career. Freshman Frankie Hammoude joined Weeks on base with a walk followed by Kayleen Shafer hitting her fourth-season double that scored Weeks.
Garcia reached first safely after singling to the third baseman and using her speed to beat the throw to first while allowing Hammoude to score, and Shafer to advance to third. Garcia then stole second, her 11th stolen base on the season, and ASU fielded the throw poorly to allow Shafer to cross the plate. All nine OSU batters got their chance in the box in the first inning.
Oregon State added to its lead in the top of the second after Weeks led off with a single to the shortstop that earned extra bases off a bad throw to first. Weeks advanced to third where she eventually scored from after Nunes flied out to left field to give the Beavers a 4-0 lead.
Weeks scored once more in the top of the fourth after she originally reached on a fielder's choice. Nunes stepped up two batters later and hit a single up the middle that allowed Weeks to score.
Mariah Mazon and the OSU defense held tough through the first six innings not allowing a run. The Sun Devils went on to add one in the bottom of the seventh inning but the Beavers held them off to capture a 5-1 victory.
Mazon tossed her team-best eighth complete game to improve to 9-3 on the season. She struck out five batters while only allowing one walk.
