Berkeley, Calif. – Oregon State softball recorded 11 hits against the Golden Bears in the process of capturing a 7-1 victory in game one.
Shelby Weeks, Camryn Ybarra, Missy Nunes and Kayleen Shafer led the bats for the Beavers each recording two hits. Jessica Garcia, Michelle Sass and Ashton Phillips added one each.
Oregon State struck first after Garcia reached on a fielder's choice and stole her 13th base on the season in the top of the first inning. Ybarra hit a RBI double into left-center field to score Garcia giving the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
OSU scored again in the third inning after Ybarra started things off with a single into right field. Ybarra advanced to second allowing Nunes to record a RBI single into shallow-left field scoring Ybarra.
The Beavers then went on a two-out rally in the fourth inning after Izzy Owen started with a walk and advanced to second. Weeks hit a RBI into the right-field fence scoring Owen followed by Garcia hitting a double down the first-base line that scored Weeks.
OSU struck again in the sixth after Shafer led-off with a single into shallow right field. Lovie Lopez came in to pinch run and advanced to second on a sac bunt from Owen. Weeks reached on an error by the second baseman that allowed Lopez to score, extending OSU's lead.
The Beavers scored two more in the seventh after Nunes singled into right field and Sass smoked one through the legs of the third baseman into left field. Nunes kicked it into high gear and scored from first base as Sass resided at second. Shafer knocked one into the left field wall to score Sass.
California scored only one run in the bottom of the third due to the effective efforts by Oregon State's defense. In the first inning, Garcia made a throw from left field to Sass at second that allowed Sass to chase down a runner attempting to go to second. In the second, Sass knocked down a ball that was moving her towards second and still got the throw off to Frankie Hammoude at first.
In the bottom of the fourth, Nunes fielded a ball, stepped on second and made the throw to Hammoude for a double play. In the sixth, Owen made the toss to Hammoude at first. Hammoude was forced to go home with it after the Golden Bear's runner on third took off and Shafer easily made the tag.
Sophomore Mariah Mazon picks up her 11th win on the season in her 14th complete game. Mazon struck out three batters throughout the seven innings.
The Beavers improve to 20-14 overall and 2-9 in Pacific-12 Conference action. Meanwhile, the Golden Bears fall to 22-19 overall and 1-11 in Pac-12 play.
