Beavers Make Late Rally but Fall to Stanford
April 05, 2019 | Softball
CORVALLIS – Oregon State softball went on a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh but fell just shy of a comeback to Stanford to drop game one of the DAM Cancer Series, 3-2.
OSU's defense saw the first true action of the game in the top of the second when the Beavers worked themselves into a bases loaded, one out situation. Stanford's batter hit one right back to Mariah Mazon in the circle. Mazon went home with it to Kayleen Shafer who made the force out before firing one down to Frankie Hammoude at first for the double play to end the half inning.
Hammoude recorded her ninth homerun on the season right afterwards as she sent a shot over the center-field fence as the leadoff batter. This put the Beavers on the board first.
Stanford tied things up in the fourth before claiming a 3-1 lead in the fifth after scoring two more runs.
The Beavers battled back in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sophomore Camryn Ybarra sent a single down the first-base line to lead things off. Ybarra was replaced by Karla Calderon as a pinch runner. Michelle Sass stepped up a couple batters later with one on and two out and recorded her fifth double of the season into left field advancing Calderon to third. Shafer stepped up and smoked one at the first baseman and reached on a fielding error that scored Calderon. The Beavers finished just short of the comeback after leaving two stranded to end the inning and the game.
Sophomore Mariah Mazon recorded her 13th complete game on the season and four strike outs as OSU fell to 19-14 overall and 1-9 in Pacific-12 Conference play.
