Beavers Fall to Cougars in Houston Classic Finale
February 16, 2020 | Softball
Houston, Texas – Despite taking an early lead, Oregon State softball (7-2) drops the final game of the weekend to Houston, 6-2, at the Houston Classic on Sunday afternoon.
Action started offensively for the Beavers with Mazon hitting a single to Houston's shortstop in the top of the second. OSU went on a two-out rally that began with Rylee Maston and Izzy Owen both drawing back-to-back walks to load the bases. Maia Rader hit a RBI single to shortstop to get the Beavers on the board and keep the bases loaded. Xiao Gin then drew the third walk of the inning to bring Maston home allowing OSU to take a 2-0 lead into the bottom half of the inning.
Houston started to make a comeback in the bottom of the third inning beginning with a batter being walked with only one out. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and crossed the plate after the Cougar's batter hit a single down the right-field line. OSU was able to shut down any further scoring to end the inning and maintain a 2-1 lead over Houston after three.
The Beavers attempted to add another run in the fourth after Maston was hit by a pitch. Rader came up with a huge two-out single to the shortstop to put runners on the corners, but OSU left them both stranded.
Houston claimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after the second batter got on. Houston hit a two-run homer over the right-center fence to take the lead. Houston loaded the bases before the Beavers made a pitching change bringing Trystan Melancon in for Mazon. Melancon gave up a single into right field that scored two more Cougars to extend their lead, 5-2, before OSU was able to end the inning.
The Beavers attempted to take things back in the sixth with Maston drawing a walk. Owen followed with a single into left field, but Oregon State left them both stranded.
Houston was able to get another runner across the plate in the bottom of the seventh that would hold to give the Cougars the 6-2 win.
Mazon falls to 3-2 on the season with seven strikeouts through 4.2 innings pitched.
