Mazon Leads Beavers in Victories Over No. 17 Tennessee and Baylor
February 25, 2022 | Softball
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Oregon State (9-3) earned its fifth and sixth straight victories with a 5-2 upset over No. 17 Tennessee before defeating Baylor, 13-7, with a nine-run sixth inning frenzy in the Friday nightcap to begin the Mary Nutter Classic.
Senior Mariah Mazon earned both wins in the circle for Oregon State while Madison Simon led the offense from behind the plate.
In the earlier game, Mazon tossed the complete game and surrendered just five hits and struck out 11 against the nationally-ranked Lady Vols. With the win, she now holds an ERA of 1.29. Mazon also did work behind the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Beaver offense.
Oregon State (8-3) compiled eight hits against Tennessee and did its necessary offensive damage in the third and seventh with a pair of two-run frames. Simon knocked her first home run of the season and fourth of her career in the fourth.
Simon followed Mazon with a 2-for-3 performance, including an RBI while Grace Messmer (1-for-4) and Kiki Escobar (1-for-4) also added hits for the Orange & Black.
Notably, Tennessee was riding a four-game winning streak including a 6-2 win over No. 24 UCF back on Feb. 19.
In the Friday finale, Oregon State came from five-runs behind and scattered 11 hits to earn the victory. Simon went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI while freshman centerfielder Eliana Gottlieb added a multi-hit performance against the Bears going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Mazon dealt the final 3.2 innings that saw three hits and three strikeouts as the senior moves to 4-3 in the circle for the Orange & Black this season.
