Haendiges, Beavs Blank Illinois State

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Sarah Haendiges tossed a complete game and fanned six as Oregon State edged Illinois State by a 1-0 line on Thursday afternoon to open play at the Littlewood Classic.Â
"Not our best hitting day but they stuck it out, stayed with it and pulled out the W," said head coach Laura Berg. "I'm really proud of Sarah (Haendiges), she did a great job in the circle."
Oregon State (3-3) walked things off when Kristalyn Romulo crossed home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh. After Haendiges retired the Redbirds in order, Lici Campbell kicked up the offense when she knocked a single down the left field line, but was replaced on the bag by Romulo. In the following at bats, Abby Doerr and Eliana Gottlieb advance Romulo to third with a sacrifice bunt to second and a single toward right, respectively.Â
On a 1-2 count to Madyson Clark with one down, Romulo took off when the catcher could not handle the wild pitch.Â
Haendiges (2-1) collected her second win of the season behind 7.0 innings pitched, walked just one and allowed four hits.Â
The sophomore from Upland, Calif., tallied a pair of strikeouts in the second to thwart an early threat by Illinois State in the opening inning - when the Redbirds had two consecutive batters reach base before being stranded. She followed the first with a 1-2-3 second that featured another two punchouts after a flyout to left.Â
When the Redbirds threatened with a runner at second with just one out, Haendiges ended things with her fifth K and forcing a groundout to short to end the third.
Oregon State continues play in the Littlewood Classic tomorrow, taking on BYU at 3:30 p.m. PT tomorrow afternoon.
