Beavers Hang on for Win Over GCU

The Beavers scored four runs between the third and fifth innings to build the lead. In the third and fourth frames, Morgan Howey and Kaiea Higa both slapped solo shots to left for the early 2-0 lead. The homestanding Lopes halved the lead in their half of the fourth with a RBI single with one away.

Following a leadoff walk, Sydney Saenz came into score off a Frankie Hammoude single to push the lead back to two runs. Not content with just the single RBI from the home run a few frames earlier, Higa knocked one through just past second to drive in Grace Messmer to push the lead to three. GCU (9-1) then answered with one in their half of the fifth.

Howey tacked on a final RBI in the sixth when she brought Eliana Gottlieb home.
The Lopes did not go away as they gave Oregon State all they could handle in the bottom of the seventh. GCU crossed home twice but those were all they could gain. Following a Tarni Stepto strikeout, Abby Doerr caught a base runner trying to swipe the third to seal the win.

Stepto (1-2) picked up her first win of 2023 in the game. The junior out of Australia tossed a complete game which saw a line that included eight strikeouts.
For just the second time in her career, Higa had a multi-RBI game. In the win over Nicholls a week ago, the Washingtonian drove in a pair of runs to help the cause.
Oregon State will play in Pacific Time for the first time this season when they open play in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The Beavs' first game is Friday, the 24th at 3:30 p.m.
