Offensive Outburst Keys Beaver Victory
March 02, 2023 | Softball
ST. GEORGE, Utah – Three run frames in the fourth and fifth were just what the Oregon State softball team needed to open the Utah Tech Trailblazer Tournament with a 7-4 win over BYU.
"I think we had a great day today," noted head coach Laura Berg. "We need to pick it up a bit on defense - three errors are not acceptable but offensively, we brought our bats to the game, which was phenomenal. Sarah (Haendiges) had a gutty performance and I'm just proud of the team."
Facing a 1-0 deficit after BYU opened the scoring, Oregon State (8-8) took the lead with a three-spot in the top of the fourth to counter the Cougars. With two in scoring position and just one out, Aubree Seaney roped a single down the right field line to give the Beavers a 2-1 lead. Just two batters later, Madyson Clark's single brought Eliana Gottlieb home for the two-run cushion.
After BYU plated one in their half of the fourth, one swing was all that was required to plate another three in the fifth. Kaiea Higa's no-doubt home run to center brought home Frankie Hammoude and Morgan Howey to bring the lead to four. The blast was Higa's third of the season and first since the win at Grand Canyon in the Littlewood Classic.
The Cougars would trim their deficit to a pair in the sixth with a home run. Continuing the pattern, Jade Soto crossed home to bring the lead back up when Des Rivera reached on an error in the top of the seventh.
Sarah Haendiges (4-3) picked up the win after tossing 6.0 innings. The sophomore struck out three but allowed seven hits and all four runs. Ellie Garcia pitched the seventh, where she struck out one and yielded a hit in her second save of the season.
Oregon State's offense tallied 13 hits – a season-best – off four BYU pitchers.
Action from St. George will continue with a doubleheader tomorrow against Utah Valley and Utah Tech. First pitch of game one is set for 9 a.m. PT with game two to follow 30 minutes later.
