Comeback Effort Falls Just Short
January 27, 2025 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State came back from down 25 to within a basket in Monday's game against Washington State, but the Beavers fell just short in a 65-57 loss to the Cougars.
Â
The Beavs trailed by 25 with 6:45 left in the third quarter before fighting back into the game and getting to within three on a steal and layup from Catarina Ferreira with 1:12 left in the game. OSU won the fourth quarter 23-11, but the Cougars made just enough plays down the stretch to eke out the win.
Â
The comeback followed a half where the Cougs couldn't miss and the Beavs couldn't find the bottom of the net. WSU made an astounding 76 percent of its three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes, while OSU made 27 percent of its shots and 18 percent of its triples.
Â
In the second half, the Beavs shot 38 percent from the floor but held Wazzu without a three and forced the Cougs to take and make tough shots en route to a 35 percent shooting half for the visitors.
Â
Only one Beav scored in double figures – Ferreira, with 13 – but six scored at least five points and every Beaver who saw the court in the second half scored at least one basket. Ferreira and Sela Heide keyed the comeback with a combined 17 second-half points.
Â
Kennedie Shuler and Tiara Bolden provided a strong presence on the boards with the two guards grabbing five each. Bolden also dished four assists. Freshman Ally Schimel showed more confidence in her three-point shot, going 2-for-7 with a couple near-baskets that rattled out.
Â
Oregon State continues its three-game homestand on Thursday when it takes on Pepperdine at 6 p.m. Â The Beavs close a stretch of five games in 10 days with St. Mary's on Saturday at 2 p.m.
