March 08, 2025 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. – Continuing play in the Jane Sanders Classic, the Oregon State softball team upset 12th-ranked Oregon after dropping a contest to eighth-ranked Florida State in Eugene.
The win over the Ducks marked the first win of the season for the Beavers (10-12) against a ranked foe and the second against a team from the Big Ten. It is now the second consecutive year with a win over a 12th-ranked team, following an April 2024 win over no. 12 UCLA.
Game 1: #8 Florida State 8, Oregon State 2
Late-inning offense from the Seminoles quelled an early upset bid by Oregon State in the first game of day two of the Eugene-based event as no. 8 Florida State defeated the Beavers by an 8-2 score.
Tristian Thompson's second-inning single to left center brought in Samantha Gutierrez to match a Seminole homer from the first to bring the Beavers on even terms. Three innings later, the Beavers got closer Florida State on the board when Morgan Howey reached on a fielder's choice and brought Paige Bambarger into home to make it 3-2.
Florida State broke it open with five between the fifth and sixth innings to make it out of reach for Oregon State.
Ellie Garcia (5-4) was charged with the loss after allowing all eight FSU runs, with six being earned. The Californian allowed 14 Nole hits and issued one walk.
Game 2: Oregon State 5, #12 Oregon 2
Facing off in the first of three times this season, the Beavers used three runs to pull away from the archrival Ducks by a 5-2 line.
Logan Hulon (4-8) kept Oregon in check with the complete game and piled up 8 punchouts to just six hits and no walks. Just one of the Duck runs was charged to the graduate student.
Responding after Oregon used two to pull even in the fourth, Jada Lewis highlighted a three-run sixth with a two-RBI double to the warning track in left field, bringing home Tristian Thompson and Nicole Donahue following a bases-loaded walk to Paige Bambarger, who walked in Justice Flores.
The Beavers got onto the scoreboard first when Thompson launched a two-run homer to left center in the second and held the lead until the fourth when the Ducks plated a pair of their own an error to center field.
Lewis and Thompson paced the offense with a pair of RBI each while Bambarger added one. Jaeya Butler had a team-leading two hits in the game while four others contributed one.
Oregon State will close the Jane Sanders Classic tomorrow with a game against Abilene Christian. First pitch from Eugene is set for noon and can be seen on B1G+.
