BERKELEY, Calif. - Camille Saxton had 10 kills and Megan McBride and Ashley Eneliko chipped in with five apiece but the Oregon State volleyball team dropped a three-set decision (14-25, 19-25, 18-25) to California Friday night at Haas Pavilion.
Saxton finished with her 10 kills in 31 attempts for a .258 hitting percentage to lead the Beavers, who were unable to get their offense going throughout the night. Oregon State hit just .122 overall while California finished at a .364 clip.
"We lost the serving-passion game in a disappointing fashion tonight," said Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych. "They had 12 service aces against us. You're not going to win when a team has 12 aces against you. Camille played well tonight. We just didn't block, serve or receive well.
"It's just one of those things. We tried every conceivable lineup and player tonight. Let's not take it away from Cal. They came out fired up and served and attacked really well."
McBride added 18 assists while Eneliko pitched in with two assisted blocks. Overall, the Beavers (12-5 overall, 2-3 Pac-12 Conference) had five blocks - including two by Saxton, both solo - while Cal finished with 12.5. Shannon Hawari had seven to lead the Golden Bears (9-7, 3-3).
Cal did not have a player finish in double-figure kills, but rather, found its offense through several players. Hawari had nine to lead the team while Christina Higgins tallied seven and four others had five apiece.
The Golden Bears also had the advantage in digs - 38 to 24 - and assists, 38-29. Oregon State had just 98 attempts offensively, the team's fourth-lowest mark of the 2012 season, while Cal had just 77, the least by an Oregon State opponent.
Cal won the first set, 25-14, and never trailed. The Golden Bears jumped out to a 4-1 lead and used a .321 hitting percentage to take the frame while the Beavers posted 10 kills but also had 10 attack errors. Saxton and Eneliko led the Beavers with three kills apiece.
The Beavers improved their hitting percentage to .094 but so did California's to .355 and the Golden Bears took the second set, 25-19. Saxton led the Beavers with five kills. Oregon State pulled to an 18-18 tie late, but Cal scored seven of the set's last eight points.
Cal ended the match with a 25-19 win in the third set. OSU hit a match-best .321 during the frame, collecting 13 of the team's 31 overall kills. Continuing their trend, however, the Golden Bears improved again, hitting a healthy .444.
Oregon State continues its weekend of play Sunday when visiting No. 7 Stanford at Maples Pavilion. The match begins at 2 p.m. PT and can be seen live on the Pac-12 Networks in the state of Oregon. Live stats are available on osubeavers.com.
