Beavers Split Results on Day One

Los Angeles, Calif. – Oregon State softball splits the results on day one at the LMU Invitational at Smith Field in Los Angeles, Calif., dropping the opening game to New Mexico, 6-5, and capturing a 6-2 victory over Loyola Marymount.
GAME ONE vs NEW MEXICO
Oregon State struck first in the top of the second inning after Frankie Hammoude led off with a walk. Kayleen Shafer stepped up two batters later and hit a RBI double up the middle that scored Hammoude to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
OSU extended that lead in the top of the third following a double down the right field line from freshman, Ashton Phillips. Shelby Weeks hit a RBI double to almost the exact same spot at Phillips. Jessica Garcia stepped up and hit her ninth career triple to score Weeks and give the Beavers a 3-0 lead.
Weeks and Missy Nunes got on base again in the fifth inning that allowed Hammoude to hit an RBI up the middle to score Weeks. Izzy Owen hit her first RBI of the game in the top of the sixth to score Shafer to extend Oregon State's lead to 5.
New Mexico closed the gap in the bottom of the sixth scoring one run. The Lobos made a full comeback in the bottom of the seventh as the Beavers dropped the first game of the day 6-5.
Senior Meehra Nelson finished with 12 strike outs in 6.0 innings pitched.
GAME TWO vs LOYOLA MARYMOUNT
Weeks reached first base on a bad throw to start things off for the Beavers in the top of first followed by Lovie Lopez getting a single. Nunes hit a slow roller to LMU's first baseman and was tagged out while advancing Weeks and Lopez into scoring position. Hammoude came up big with a sac fly to right field that scored Weeks, and on the bad throw trying to go home, Lopez tacked on another run.
The Lions recorded one run in the bottom of the first to cut OSU's lead in half, making it 2-1.
Oregon State struck again in the top of the third after Weeks took first base due to being hit by a pitch. Weeks would score a couple batters later following Hammoude reaching first on an error by LMU giving OSU a 3-1 lead.
The Beavers stayed dormant until the top of the fifth when Phillips led off with a single up the middle. Lopez followed with a double into center field before Nunes set a three-run homer over the left field fence extending OSU's lead, 6-1.
LMU scored once more in the bottom of the fifth before OSU claimed the 6-2 win.
Sophomore Mariah Mazon earned the win improving to 6-3 after striking out eight batters.
The Beavers will return to Smith Field at LMU tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. against Western Carolina.
