Beavers Record 17 Hits on Day Two in LA

Los Angeles, Calif. – Oregon State softball wins both games on day two at after racking up 17 hits between the two games taking down Western Carolina, 7-0 and New Mexico, 5-3.
GAME ONE vs WESTERN CAROLINA
Shelby Weeks started the Beavers with a single back to the pitch in the first inning and then stole her 51st career stolen base to be on second when Missy Nunes walked. Frankie Hammoude advanced both runners into scoring position that allowed Kayleen Shafer to hit a two-RBI single into left field to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead after one.
Camryn Ybarra reached first base on an error to start the second inning with a runner. Ashton Phillips singled through the left side and advanced Ybarra to second and into scoring position for Lovie Lopez to hit a double over the left fielder's head giving OSU a 3-0 lead.
Hammoude reached first again in the third inning off an error. Karla Calderon came in to pinch run and advanced to second when Shafer hit a single into center field. Jessica Garcia advanced both runners into scoring position to allow Ybarra to fire one right back at the pitcher that scored Calderon. Rader would also reach on a fielder's choice that scored Shafer. The Beavers added two more runs to extend the lead to 7-0 following the top of the third inning.
Shafer led the offense this game going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run.
Oregon State held WCU scoreless behind the charge of senior pitcher Meehra Nelson's six strike outs. Nelson improved to 5-1 on the season.
GAME TWO vs NEW MEXICO
Lopez led off for the second game of the day and hit a single right back at the pitcher for a lead-off single. Nunes stepped up to the plate two batters later and hit a two-run home run to give the Beavers the early 2-0 lead heading to the bottom of the first inning.
New Mexico cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first before Mariah Mazon forced the Lobos to leave two on by striking out back-to-back batters.
The Lobos added another run in the fourth to tie things up, 2-2.
Nunes would start off the sixth inning by dropping a single into shallow left field. Hammoude was walked and Calderon once again came in to pinch run. Bailey McLaughlin laid down a flawless sacrifice bunt to advance both runners into scoring position. Oregon State then went on to capitalized on errors that New Mexico made including a dropped fly ball to shallow right field that allowed Weeks to get on base and Nunes to score. Jessica Garcia followed that with a single down the first-base line that scored Calderon and Weeks.
New Mexico scored once more in the bottom of the sixth, but Oregon State held off all further advances to claim a 5-3 victory.
Mazon finished the game with 11 strike outs through 7.0 innings.
OSU will wrap-up action in Los Angeles tomorrow morning against Western Carolina at 10 a.m.
