Late Inning Heroics Lift Beavs in Home Opener
March 17, 2023 | Softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Eliana Gottlieb's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth sent the Beavers faithful home happy in the first home game of the season after a 2-1 win over California.
"I'm proud of this team," said head coach Laura Berg. "They competed in every at-bat and in every play, especially Tarni (Stepto) in the circle. They beat a good Cal team that's very well-coached. We just played fundamental softball."
Following two quick outs in the home half of the sixth, consecutive singles by Erin Mendoza and Des Rivera set up the spark that Gottlieb lit. A single to shallow right was just what the Beavers (10-14, 1-3 Pac-12) needed to bust through for the winning run.
Despite allowing the first run of the game to Cal, Tarni Stepto surrendered just three hits but fanned five across all 7.0 frames.
The home team didn't trail for very long as Morgan Howey crossed home in the first to even the score at 1 in the bottom of the first frame.
Oregon State scattered 10 hits across eight different batters, including Rivera and Grace Messmer, who each tallied a pair. The last three – in the bottom of the sixth – did the most damage, which were charged to Cal's Anna Reimers, who was tagged with the loss.
The Beavers threatened offensively in the fifth with runners at second and third after an Abby Doerr double. To try and take the lead, Doerr was gunned down by the Cal centerfielder on an unsuccessful attempt to tag up.
