Butler’s Big Day Helps Beavers Split Against UCSB and No. 7 UCLA
February 07, 2026 | Softball
IRVINE, Calif. – Jaeya Butler hit three home runs across two games as the Oregon State Beavers won game number two of the season, 4-0, over UC Santa Barbara before falling in five innings to the No. 7 UCLA Bruins.
Game one: Oregon State 4, UC Santa Barbara 0
Tristian Thompson gave the Beavers an early lead with an RBI double in the bottom half of the first inning, hitting a ball into right center to score Jada Lewis, who singled to lead off the game and advanced on a groundout. For Thompson, who led the Beavers in RBI and slugging percentage last season, the hit was her first of the season after finishing with a combined two walks but no hits in yesterday's games.
That early lead proved pivotal for the Beavs, who eventually broke the game open with some fireworks several innings later. Lici Campbell made a highlight-reel play at third base, laying out to snag a line drive destined for left field in the top half of the fifth, setting the stage for an exciting bottom half of the inning.
After seeing three home runs go foul in a single at-bat earlier in the game, Jaeya Butler made no mistake in the fifth, driving a ball deep to left for her second two-run home run in as many days to turn a one-run advantage into three. The deep shot made if four RBI in three games for the Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native, who finished 1-2 with a walk and carried that momentum into the afternoon game against No. 7 UCLA.
Morgan Howey, who had four hits in two games across two games on opening day, drove in another run in the sixth to seal the Beavers' four-run win as Amelia Streuber posted her first shutout of the season with six hits allowed and one strikeout across seven innings of work.
Game two: No. 7 UCLA 12, Oregon State 4
Butler's hot start to the season continued against the seventh-ranked Bruins, hitting a 3-1 pitch over the fence in left field to give the Beavers an early 1-0 lead, then proceeding to hit yet another home run in the bottom of the second; across two games on Saturday, Butler hit 3-5 with three home runs and five RBI.
Between both Butler home runs was another RBI by Jada Lewis, who homered in yesterday's win over Utah Tech. Trailing 2-1, Lewis singled to left to score Tessa Hogue, who had singled and advanced on a fielding error during the previous at-bat. After a multi-hit game against UCSB, Lewis finished her day with three hits across two games of action.
With Lewis' and Butler's offensive firepower, the Beavers twice led on their highly ranked opponent, taking a 1-0 lead on Butler's solo shot in the first before taking a 4-2 lead thanks to her two-run blast in the second, which came one at-bat after Lewis' RBI single.
Kynlee Griffith made her Oregon State debut in this contest, striking out one and allowing one hit in one inning of relief work as four different Oregon State pitchers featured against UCLA, who scored two runs in the first, five in the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth to end the game in five.
Oregon State softball wraps up its opening weekend of play with a single game against Long Beach State tomorrow morning at the LBSU Softball Complex.
