CORVALLIS, Ore. - Arica Nassar paced the Oregon State volleyball team with 11 kills and hit .714 but the Beavers dropped a three-set decision to Arizona State Thursday night at Gill Coliseum. Set scores were 19-25, 23-25, 20-25.
"We started poorly and ended poorly," Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych said. "In between we did some good things. We really got our attack going; Arica Nassar had a fabulous match and so did Ashley Eneliko. We just could not stop their right side hitter."
Nassar finished with 14 attempts and totaled 11 kills with one error. The sophomore's .714 marked the third time this season at .700 or better. She added two assisted blocks to her day.
Camille Saxton was close behind with 10 kills, and had one assist and eight digs in the loss. Eneliko tallied nine kills and six blocks to pace the Beavers (13-14 overall, 3-12 Pac-12 Conference), who finished with seven to four for Arizona State (17-11, 6-9).
Both teams hit well - Arizona State led the match with a .346 percentage while Oregon State had a .260 clip. Erica Wilson and Nora Tuioti-Mariner each had 12 kills to lead Arizona State.
The Beavers were strong defensively, trailing the Sun Devils by just one dig, 38-37. Becky Defoe led Oregon State with 14 digs, pushing her season total to 497. That's now the second-best mark in a single-season at Oregon State, trailing her program best of 555 in 2011.
The Beavers dropped the first set, 25-19, as Arizona State hit .317 compared to Oregon State's .276 clip. OSU tallied just two attack errors during the frame but managed only 29 total attacks compared to the Sun Devils' 41.
The lead changed hands once and there were seven ties - as late as 21 - before the Sun Devils pulled away for the 25-23 win in set two. The Beavers improved their hitting percentage to .372 but so did Arizona State, which hit .469.
Arizona State took the third and final set with a 25-20 win. The Beavers held a late 20-18 lead but the Sun Devils scored the last seven points for the win. Both teams hit their lowest during the frame, with ASU at .265 and Oregon State at .094.
