CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State volleyball team got double-figure kills from four players, including team-leader Camille Saxton with 17, but dropped a five-set thriller to Arizona Friday night at Gill Coliseum. Set scores were 20-25, 25-14, 21-25, 25-19 and 17-19.
The Beavers held a late lead, 12-8, in the fifth and final set, and had match point at both 14-12 and 14-13 but the Wildcats managed to tie the score at 14. Arizona went up 15-14, only to find the Beavers tie at 15. The teams traded points from there on, but Arizona scored the final two for the win.
"We changed the lineup tonight," Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych said. "Tayla (Woods) came in and did a fantastic job in setting. The players who came in did a super job. In the end, we had to find a way to win and we didn't."
Saxton was 17-of-52 on the night, pacing the Beavers (13-15 overall, 3-13 Pac-12 Conference), who hit .235 overall. Arica Nassar and Ashley Eneliko chipped in with 12 apiece while Laura Schaudt had 10.
The Beavers held the advantage statistically, out-hitting Arizona, .235 to .195, posting more kills, 62 to 61, and more blocks, 16 to 12. Arizona had the advantage in digs, 60 to 58, and assists, 57 to 53.
Madi Kingdon was the lone Arizona (14-12, 6-9) player in double figures with 24 kills.
Woods had a big night for the Beavers, tallying a double double with 39 assists and 11 digs. She was second on the team in digs to Becky Defoe, whose 17 pushed her past the 500 mark for the season. She now has 514 on the year, trailing her own school record of 555 set last season.
Nassar was just one block shy of a double double as well. Two of her nine blocks were solo - the Beavers had five as a team.
The five-set match was just the fifth of the season for the Beavers, who fell to 3-2 in them.
Arizona picked up the set-one win, 25-20, after hitting .323 compared to .242 for the Beavers. Saxton led the Beavers with five kills during the frame, which saw seven lead changes and nine tie scores.
The Beavers picked up the 25-14 win in set two by holding Arizona to a .036 hitting percentage while producing a .440 clip. Oregon State led the entire set and was up 22-11 late in the set and held that advantage for the win.
The Sun Devils won set three, 25-21, and hit .233 compared to .119 for the Beavers. Oregon State held an early lead but the Wildcats tied the score at eight and later led 14-11, an advantage it never relinquished.
OSU pushed the match to five sets with a 25-19 win in set four. The Beavers only hit .188 during the frame but held Arizona to a .000 percentage. The set was tied as late as 18 but the Beavers scored seven of the frame's last eight points.
Oregon State makes its final trip of the 2012 regular season when visiting Washington State (Friday night at 7 p.m. PT) and Washington (Saturday at 7 p.m.). Neither match will be televised; however, each will be streamed for free on pac-12.com.
