Hulon, Howey Key in Saturday Sweep
February 22, 2025 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Combining for 16 hits in two games, the Oregon State softball team rebounded for two wins on Saturday, defeating Long Beach and Rutgers.
Morgan Howey led the potent offense, totaling five RBI, including the difference-making three-run home run against the Scarlet Knights.
Game 1: OSU 7, LBSU 5
Facing a 2-0 deficit in the fifth inning, the Beaver offense clicked when it needed to. Between the fifth and opening third of the sixth, the two-run hole quickly evaporated before turning into a lead. Oregon State used a single run in the fifth to immediately chip away. The Beavers followed it up with five in the ensuing frame off five hits, highlighted by Howey's two-RBI double to deep center.
Despite The Beach using a three-run homer in the seventh, the deficit was still too much as the Beavers started the day with a two-run win.
Ellie Garcia improved to 3-1 with the complete game win. The Chino, Calif., native struck out a pair but was tagged with all five of The Beach's runs.
Game 2: OSU 3, Rutgers 0
Logan Hulon had a stellar performance in the afternoon game with Rutgers, going the distance and giving up just one Scarlet Knight hit. The Texan took a perfect game into the third inning before surrendering a walk. It took Rutgers until the fifth inning to register their sole hit of the game.
Still deadlocked in a scoreless game in the fifth, Howey brought in Ella Dardis and Jada Lewis off a no-doubt home run to left center to make it 3-0 and add some more pressure on Rutgers.
In addition to just the one hit by Rutgers, Hulon and the Beaver defense only allowed one Scarlet Knight to reach scoring position all game long.
Oregon State will conclude action in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic tomorrow with a game against Seattle U. First pitch against the Redhawks is slated for a 9 a.m. first pitch that can be seen exclusively on FloSoftball.
