Three-Run Seventh Seals Opening Day Split
February 07, 2025 | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Oregon State softball team opened the 2025 season with a doubleheader in the Mustang Classic in San Luis Obispo. Late inning offense – highlighted by a pair of runs batted in by Morgan Howey – helped the Beavers over Cal Poly in the day's second game after falling to Ball State in the opener.
Game 1: Ball State 4, Oregon State 1
Despite eight strikeouts – including six in the first 2.0 frames – from Logan Hulon, the Beavers couldn't get runners home as Ball State took the opener by a 4-1 line. Oregon State threatened for the game's first lead with loaded bases but couldn't bring anyone home in the fifth. The Cardinals responded with three runs in the following inning on a homer.
In addition to the punchouts, Hulon (0-1) yielded five hits and five walks and was charged with each of the four runs.
Game 2: Oregon State 4, Cal Poly 1
With a fifth-inning triple and a seventh-inning sacrifice fly, Howey and her two RBI were key to the Beavers' game two win over Cal Poly in the afternoon tilt.
Following the Mustangs tying the game in the sixth with a double to left center, the Oregon State offense pulled together for the biggest frame of the young season.
New additions from the offseason helped Oregon State string together the late offense. Nicole Donahue and Madison Weir put up consecutive singles before Rylei Trujillo advanced runners. After Howey's sac fly, Paige Bambarger combined her first collegiate hit with her first RBI to drive in Isabella Valdez for the 3-1 lead. Two batters later following Jada Lewis' single to left, she and Bambarger pulled off a successful double steal to seal it at 4-1.
Ellie Garcia (1-0) finished off the host Mustangs in the seventh when she forced a three-up, three-down frame. The senior from California went the distance, struck out five but allowed five hits and the sole earned run.
Oregon State (2-0) will continue action in the Mustang Classic with two more tomorrow, one each against Ball State and Cal Poly. Games are slated for start times of 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
