Beavers, Broncos Split Friday Double
May 09, 2025 | Softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State softball team opened the final series of the 2025 season with a split against Santa Clara.
Highlighted by home runs in the fifth and sixth innings, the Beavers (24-22, 7-7) took the first game by a 2-1 score line. Santa Clara evened the series after a three-run seventh for a 4-1 win in the nightcap.
Game 1: OSU 2, Santa Clara 1
Trailing by a 1-0 score in the late stages of the game, Madison Weir connected on a hitter's count – 3-1 – down the left field line for her a solo homer – her first as a Beaver – to bring the game back to even. In the ensuing Oregon State inning, Jaeya Butler slammed a ball on a 1-0 count for the lead to make it 2-1, and a lead the Beavers wouldn't lose.
Santa Clara threatened in their seventh with two runners on the bases but Logan Hulon and the Oregon State defense held on for the series-opening win with the one-run advantage.
Hulon (13-12) went the distance for the win with eight strikeouts to just the one unearned run on four hits and three walks.
Game 2: Santa Clara 4, OSU 1
Unable to capture a second come-from-behind win on the day, the Beavers dropped the nightcap by a 4-1 line. After Lici Campbell's RBI single in the sixth that brought Morgan Howey home, the Broncos punched back with three unanswered in the seventh.
Howey and Butler led off the sixth with hits – a double and a single – to open it with Beavers at the corners but following Campbell's base knock, three consecutive Oregon State batters were retired and stranded the pair.
Ellie Garcia (11-10) was tagged with the loss after throwing all 7.0 in the game. The senior was responsible for all four earned runs on 10 hits and a walk to a pair of strikeouts.
Tomorrow, the season finale – and senior day – is set for 1 p.m. at Kelly Field. The action in the rubber match will be shown on ESPN+.
