CORVALLIS, Ore. - Sean Mannion passed for four touchdowns and Oregon State nearly set a school record for most points in a league game as the No. 15 Beavers rolled past the Golden Bears, 62-14, Saturday night at Reser Stadium.
Mannion completed 24-of-34 passes for 325 yards in his first start since October 27 against Washington. In the process, the sophomore became the sixth Oregon State quarterback to surpass 5,000 yards for a career; he has 5,232 in less than two full seasons.
The 62 points scored is the second-most in school history against a league opponent; the record is 66 against Washington State in 2008. The Beavers have hit the 60-point mark 18 times since the program began playing football in 1893.
The win was Oregon State's 11th in the Beavers' last 14 tries against the Golden Bears and the 62 points surpassed the previous best of 42 in a 48-42 overtime loss in Berkeley in 1996.
Defensively, the Beavers dominated California, posting four turnovers in addition to the 322 yards of total offense allowed. California quarterback Allan Bridgford passed for just 132 yards and was intercepted one time.
Mannion found seven different receivers on the night, led by Markus Wheaton, who finished with 99 yards on seven catches. He's now just 14 yards shy of 1,000 on the year and the senior has 205 receptions in his career - fourth in school history, eight shy of tying James Newson (2000-03) for third.
Connor Hamlett picked up 80 yards and a touchdown on six receptions, setting career highs in both categories. His third touchdown of the season put the Beavers up 28-7 in the second quarter.
About the only category California managed to stay close with the Beavers was on the ground. Oregon State finished with 200 yards rushing, led by Terron Ward.
Ward led the Beavers on the ground, finishing with 128 yards on 14 carries - a 9.1 average - while scoring two touchdowns.
It was a record-setting kind of day for the Beavers, who saw Brandin Cooks tally 60 yards receiving on two catches. It pushed him to 1,039 this season. He's now just the second OSU sophomore to surpass 1,000 yards receiving - Mike Hass accomplished it first in 2003 - and he also now has the seventh-best total.
All told, Oregon State finished with 559 yards of total offense, including 359 through the air. It was OSU's second-best offensive effort of the season and tied for the 16th-best mark in school history.
Oregon State scored the first two touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 49-7 lead. Storm Woods scored from 1 yard out less than four minutes into the half and Ward raced in from 47 yards out less than seven minutes later.
Ward added a 17-yard score in the fourth quarter to give the Beavers their 55th point on the night, tied for the second-most ever against a league opponent.
Malcolm Agnew capped off the Beavers' scoring with a 9-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter. It was his first reception of the season and fourth of his career.
It was all Oregon State in the first half as the Beavers took a 35-7 lead into the locker room. Mannion passed for four touchdowns during the half, tying an OSU school record last achieved by Lyle Moevao in 2008, and completed 18-of-24 passes for 239 yards.
Mannion's first score came on an 11-yard pass to Wheaton in the first quarter, less than six minutes into the game. Cal managed a touchdown on a 9-yard run by Isi Sofele three minutes later but that's all the Golden Bears could manage in the half.
Tyler Anderson made it 14-7 on a 1-yard run then watched as Mannion tossed touchdown passes of 48, 14 and 6 yards, respectively, to Cooks, Connor Hamlett and Micah Hatfield. The Beavers ended the half with 333 yards of total offense while the Golden Bears totaled 202.
The Beavers' defense was stout. Oregon State did not record a sack but forced two fumbles and an interception. Jordan Poyer picked off his sixth pass of the season in the first quarter and later recovered a fumble forced by Rashad Reynolds.
The 35 first-half points for the Beavers marked the most in a half by Oregon State this season and was just seven shy of the team's overall high of 42 against BYU in the sixth game of the season.
The Beavers stay at home next weekend for the second of three consecutive games at Reser Stadium when hosting Oregon in the Civil War presented by Pacific Source, Your Local Ford Stores, Wells Fargo and McDonald's. The game is scheduled for a noon start on the Pac-12 Networks.
